There are two main types of power supplies that are generally used with security equipment and other electronics: Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and Regular Power Supplies.
Both types provide multiple power sources; however, UPS are more often recommended for video security purposes since they offer greater protection of your recorded video and equipment.
A UPS provides the same basic functionality as a regular power supply with one important difference: battery backup. When power is interrupted due to inclement weather or a blown fuse, a UPS will allow your electronic device to keep functioning normally. A UPS backup is typically used to protect storage devices that hold important information, such as computers and, notably for our purposes, DVRs. When purchasing a video security system, it is wise to consider purchasing a UPS as well. This will ensure uninterrupted recording for as long as your UPS battery backup lasts. Remember to check the battery life as they will only supply your equipment with power for a limited time before running out but, typically (by the time you have realized a power interruption), you’ll have more than enough time to make appropriate arrangements.
